IfYes ("we", "us", or "our") is a social app for asking your friends the questions you can't ask out loud. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices. By using IfYes, you agree to this policy.
Summary
- Your questions are anonymous. Friends see "one of your friends asked this" — never your name, unless a match reveals you to one person.
- Your answers and guesses are anonymous. Nobody — including the asker — sees who answered or who they guessed, only counts.
- Who you secretly pick as the intended answerer is never shown to anyone, including them. It is only used to detect a match.
- A no is never relayed, and neither is a wrong guess. Both are indistinguishable from never having seen the question.
- Questions vanish after 7 days for everyone, and match chats keep only the last 7 messages.
- We collect your phone number for sign-in and friend matching. We do not sell your personal data.
Information we collect
Account information
- Phone number — used for authentication via one-time passcode (OTP) SMS, sign-in, and so friends can find you.
- Username — chosen by you; visible to your friends in their friends list and guess picker, never on questions you post.
- Profile photo — optional, uploaded by you and visible to your friends.
- Account identifier — a unique user ID assigned when you create an account.
Questions and answers
- Question text — the yes/no question you post, visible to your friends anonymously ("one of your friends asked this") for up to 7 days. Your identity as asker is never displayed to anyone unless a match occurs, and then only to your match.
- Intended answerer — the friend you secretly pick when posting. This is stored only to detect a match and is never displayed to anyone, including that friend.
- Answers and guesses — your yes/no responses and, with a yes, your one guess at who asked. Both are stored anonymously from the perspective of other users: askers see only aggregate counts, and guesses are never shown to anyone.
Matches and chat
- Match records — created only when the person you secretly picked answers yes and correctly guesses you. Visible only to the two of you.
- Chat messages — messages in a match chat. Only the most recent 7 messages are retained; older messages are permanently deleted.
Friends
- Friend connections — mutual friendships established by phone-number lookup and approval on both sides.
- Contact suggestions — if you choose to find friends from your contacts, phone numbers are used to check for matches. We do not store your contact book.
Website
- Waitlist phone number — if you sign up on our landing page, we store your phone number to text you once at launch.
What we do NOT do
- We never reveal who asked a question — except to the one matched person, on a match.
- We never reveal who answered a question or who they guessed, to anyone.
- We never reveal who a question was secretly meant for — unless that exact person answers yes and guesses the asker, in which case only the two of you are told.
- We never relay a "no" or a wrong guess. Both are indistinguishable from never seeing the question.
- We never sell your data or offer paid features that de-anonymize anyone.
How matching works with your data
When you post a question, you privately select one friend. That selection — and your identity as asker — is stored server-side and checked against incoming answers. Answering yes requires one guess at who asked. If — and only if — your selected friend answers yes and guesses you, both of you receive a match notification and a private chat opens. In every other case (they answer no, they guess wrong, they never answer, other friends answer yes), nothing is surfaced and the question simply expires after 7 days like every other question.
Data retention and deletion
- Questions — deleted for everyone 7 days after posting. Matched questions are archived and visible only to their creator.
- Chat messages — only the last 7 messages of a match chat are kept; older messages are permanently deleted as new ones arrive.
- Account data — retained while your account is active. Deleting your account removes your profile, questions, answers, matches, and chats from our servers within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law.
Third-party services
We use the following third-party services to operate IfYes:
- Supabase — authentication, database, and storage (Supabase Privacy Policy)
- Twilio — delivery of SMS one-time passcodes and invites (Twilio Privacy Policy)
These providers process data according to their own privacy policies. We only share what is necessary for the service to function.
Data storage and security
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) and stored in our secure cloud database. We use row-level security so users can only access data they are entitled to see — which, by design, excludes other people's answers and secret selections.
Your rights and choices
- Username and photo — edit or remove in the app Settings.
- Friends — remove a friend at any time; they stop seeing your questions immediately.
- Account deletion — delete your account directly in the app via Settings > Delete Account. You can also email us at chris@ifyes.app if you are unable to access the app.
- Access — contact us to request a copy of your data.
Children's privacy
IfYes is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
International users
Your data may be processed and stored on servers located outside your country. By using IfYes, you consent to this transfer. We take steps to ensure your data is treated securely and in accordance with this policy.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised policy on this page and update the "Last updated" date. Continued use of IfYes after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
